Meritorious Attention
One of the most apparent threads running through the nomination materials of state superintendent of the year honorees is the diligent efforts they commit to elevating students most at risk of failure or underachievement. Thomas Gentzel, a longtime judge in AASA鈥檚 National Superintendent of the Year program, spotted that among the 2026 award winners and brought it to our attention earlier this year.
In our lead article, 鈥淪econd Chances, Signing Days and Care Closets,鈥� freelance writer Sarah Hall examines the efforts of eight state superintendents of the year across the country who have tackled the socioeconomic divide among students to make closing achievement gaps a priority in their leadership work.
Gentzel, who once headed the National School Boards Association, said he was impressed by the willingness of these school system leaders 鈥渢o hold the mirror up in front of themselves and say, 鈥榃hat is it that we need to do to help them?鈥欌��
Elsewhere in this issue, I call your attention to the State of the Superintendency infographic, in which a majority of incumbents say they would choose to become superintendents again if they were starting over their professional lives. In these days of unprecedented pressures, I鈥檇 consider that quite an encouraging message.
