As diversity, equity and inclusion policies have come under political attack recently, one casualty has been the effort to recruit teachers in K-12 education who match public schools’ increasingly diverse student populations. That’s especially the case in conservative states and communities, given red-leaning voters’ discomfort with anything that sounds like affirmative action.

Even so, students really do benefit from teachers who share their background, and there are ways to recruit such teachers that don’t run afoul of the public’s antipathy toward racial preferences.

Here are three steps school districts can consider.
