ܲAVƵSends Letter to House on Farm Bill
April 29, 2026
Today, ܲAVƵsent a letter to all members of the House of Representatives to share our thoughts on the Farm, Food and National Security Act (H.R. 7567) ahead of the floor vote. The legislation marks the first effort of 2026 to reauthorize federal agriculture, nutrition, and conservation programs—the comprehensive package known as the “farm bill”. As an organization that represents the priorities of K-12 education leaders, we have a narrow scope of interest in this bill as it pertains to the Secure Rural Schools Program (SRS), which provides foundational financial support to many rural school districts, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a critical component of the federal nutrition programs that ensure children are nourished and ready to learn.
While you can read the full letter here, our position can be summarized as: We greatly appreciate the five-year reauthorization of SRS included in the bill, but we are deeply concerned by the $187 billion cut to SNAP that Congress passed as part of One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and the impact it will have on students and schools. The farm bill represents a bipartisan opportunity to make meaningful changes to SNAP and we strongly encourage further consideration to address the most harmful SNAP provisions from OBBBA.
AASA's engagement on the farm bill is new this year, stemming from the Executive Committee’s and Governing Board’s adoption of a new provision to protect and preserve SNAP as part of our legislative agenda. Whereas we previously shared information about SNAP with members, the new advocacy position allows ܲAVƵto explicitly advocate for legislative language to protect SNAP.
