Âܲ·AVÊÓƵFiles Amicus in Anoka-Hennepin Case

March 03, 2026

Âܲ·AVÊÓƵjoined the National School Attorneys Association, ASBO International and the COSSBA in an this week before the U.S. Supreme Court regarding a petition for certiorari in a case originally brought against the Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota.

The lawsuit was filed by residents of the district who allege that the Anoka-Hennepin school district is using taxpayer dollars to allow their teachers "union leave" time to campaign for political positions that do not align with the residents’ values. The collective-bargaining agreement between the district and the union allow teachers to take up to 100 days per year to work for the union, and the union reimburses the district for cost of substitutes.

AASA’s amicus focused narrowly on whether a municipal taxpayer has standing to object to how the district spends public dollars when the taxpayer has not suffered any concrete and particular injuries because of the expenditure, and there is no net loss of public funds.
