BOARD-SAVVY SUPERINTENDENT

In my time as a superintendent and a consultant, I’ve rarely encountered a longer-term view of the school district and the community in which the school district sits. While many districts have strategic plans in place, most focus on the near term. It is prudent, indeed imperative, to cast an eye further out toward the horizon.

Recently, I worked with two clients, one a K–12 district, the other a higher education institution, whose recently created strategic plans focused on the span of years between 2026 and 2030 because “we don’t know what the future beyond that will hold.” I encouraged them to look beyond.

Why might the long view be absent from school district governance? Two factors contribute. First, the average tenure of superintendents is roughly five years. Second, boards of education often spend their time and energy on the issues directly in front of them, which is understandable. No matter the circumstance, the future goes beyond 2030 and must be given due consideration by the superintendent, their team and the board of education.
