Student Assessment Protocol
How Student-Engaged Assessment Builds Life Skills

A tool to help systems move beyond measuring what students know to valuing how students plan, persist, adapt, and apply learning for real life in the real world.

Use this assessment to support reflection and conversations in your district around measuring what truly predicts long-term success, not just test performance.

A purposeful assessment system keeps students at the center by intentionally aligning learning, assessment, and reflection to deepen understanding, build ownership, and support transfer beyond school.

Within such a system, Student-Engaged Assessment (SEA) Elements serve as shared design levers. They are features that educators and systems can intentionally prioritize to ensure students are active agents in their learning.

Companion Guide

This companion guide is a facilitation tool for district leadership teams to apply the Dial-Up Protocol as a means of operationalizing AASA’s Public Education Promise, Principle 5: Measure What Matters. While traditional assessment often focuses on "proving" learning through teacher- led reporting, this protocol helps districts "dial up" student involvement, shifting the narrative toward progress, reflection, and agency.
