As a superintendent in residence for the education strategy firm ILO Group, Margaret Crespo has this advice: “Whatever your leadership position, find something that helps you stay connected and grounded to who you are, so that you can do the best work on behalf of kids.” For Crespo, that something is horses. The former superintendent in Laramie County, Wyo., started riding as a child. Today, on her Colorado ranch, she uses horses to help people heal and grow through trauma recovery. A skilled backcountry equestrian, Crespo also serves on horseback with the Laramie County Sheriff’s Posse, supporting fire evacuations, other emergencies and community events. The animals help her and others reset. “Horses are our greatest mirrors,” says Crespo, an ܲAVƵmember since 2019. “They will interact with you in a way that lets you know exactly how you’re showing up in the world.”
