Science Literacy Through Disciplined Literacy Practices
August 01, 2025
Incorporating reading and writing skills into scientific inquiry in K-12 classrooms
In an age where information and misinformation are generated more quickly than facts can be verified for accuracy, educators must build students’ skills in scientific literacy — which is defined as the ability to read, understand and evaluate scientific information.
Never has science been more important. It holds the potential to slow climate change, further improve health care and advance technology. The challenge for all involved in education is to equip students with a solid understanding of science concepts and the literacy skills to navigate complex scientific information thoughtfully and critically.
When schools intentionally cultivate scientific literacy and disciplinary literacy, they lay the groundwork for students to become informed citizens who can engage thoughtfully with scientific issues throughout their lives.
A Vital Distinction
The terms scientific literacy and literacy in science or disciplinary literacy in science often are used interchangeably, though they serve distinct purposes in education and student development. We must build both skills.
