Ethical Educator
Scenario:
A high school senior with a good academic record and strong extracurriculars is applying to a few highly selective colleges. The major he intends to pursue is highly competitive, so he wants to apply instead as a linguistics major, as founder of the school’s Linguistics Club, hoping this gets him admitted before switching to his desired major, a not uncommon applicant strategy. The student’s guidance counselor, aware of this intention, is asked to write a letter of recommendation. She’s uncomfortable with the deception. How ought she proceed?
