My View

I was in college studying education in the late ’90s, blasting “Hand in My Pocket” from Jagged Little Pill every chance I could. If you’re too young to remember this album I’m jealous, but I recommend you give this 1995 hit song a listen.

I recently played the record for my teenage daughters and, not surprisingly, they listened and groaned. The optimism and humor of the lyrics appealed to me as a young adult in 1995 and still feel relevant to me in my work life as a superintendent.

In “Hand in My Pocket,” songwriters Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard juxtapose seemingly oppositional terms in a way I find oddly comforting, even now, 30 years later.
