Buyers Beware: Shopping for Classroom Observation Systems
May 01, 2026
Steps to ensure high-stakes decisions are guided by research-based tools
You and your school district leadership team are shopping for a new classroom observation system to evaluate district teachers. Where do you begin? How do you know if the most popular observation systems live up to the hype? What components within the system should you be paying most attention to?
A teacher observation system can improve the quality of instruction and increase student achievement, change the trajectory of a teacher’s career for better or worse or expose the district to wrongful termination lawsuits and negative community relations. District leaders use the data from observational systems as a basis for teacher merit pay, tenure and even termination. In other words, choosing a classroom observation system can be a high-stakes, consequential decision.
By being an informed shopper, the district leader is better protected from possible challenges to personnel decisions made based on observation-system results. Observation systems that are not reliable, not valid, biased and unfair are problematic, not just for students and teachers, but also for school or district administrators, superintendents and school board members who could be held responsible when grievances and wrongful termination lawsuits arise.
