My View

In my first year as superintendent, one lesson has quickly risen to the surface: Culture matters more than anything. Leading a school district means leading people, and the culture we create determines whether we inspire commitment or simply demand compliance.

As leaders, we often balance the urgent with the important. It’s tempting to lean on compliance. After all, policies and procedures are essential. But if compliance becomes the foundation, we risk creating an environment where people are motivated by fear rather than passion.

Compliance ensures boxes are checked. Commitment engages hearts. This distinction matters because education is a human endeavor. Teachers thrive when they’re part of something bigger than themselves.
