Michael J. Barnes
Dr. Michael J. Barnes is a passionate educator, experienced superintendent, and thought leader committed to transforming education through instructional leadership, innovation, and community engagement. With more than 30 years of experience in public education, Dr. Barnes has dedicated his career to helping students succeed by empowering teachers, fostering inclusive learning environments, and implementing forward-thinking strategies that drive academic and organizational excellence.
Currently serving as the Superintendent of Mayfield City Schools, where he began his educational journey as a social studies teacher. Dr. Barnes has also held key leadership roles including Athletic Director, Director of Human Resources, and Assistant Superintendent. He previously led Lakewood City Schools as Superintendent, where he continued to build strong school-community relationships and champion educational equity. Dr. Barnes returned to Mayfield in July 2021 to continue leading with purpose and passion in the district that shaped his early career.
Besides his K-12 leadership, Dr. Barnes has served as an adjunct professor at Ursuline College’s School of Law and in Program Development at Cleveland State University. He is actively involved in many strategic initiatives, including the Wildcat Park Project, the Mayfield Innovation Center, and efforts to expand Project-Based Learning and STEAM education. His professional affiliations include the School Superintendents Association, Buckeye Association of School Administrators, and the Fair School Funding Group. He is also a proud participant in the U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar.
Dr. Barnes holds a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, a Master’s Degree from Cleveland State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He serves as Vice President of the Edinboro University Alumni Board of Directors and is an inductee into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
