Jake Potter

Executive Director of Communications, Lawrence Public Schools

Jake Potter, APR, is in his first year as Executive Director of Communications for Lawrence Public Schools (LPS USD 497) in Kansas, after serving in a similar capacity for the previous 14 years in the Leavenworth, Kansas, Unified School District. LPS provides Pre-K through 12th grade educational services to approximately 10,000 students, on 21 campuses, and partners regularly with the University of Kansas to strengthen academic outcomes for students.

Potter is entering his 15th year in school communications where he has led multiple strategic planning efforts, supported passage and delivery of a bond initiative, developed a summer high school student PR internship and mentoring program, managed community outreach and media relations, created and co-hosted multiple podcasts, and a wide array of “other duties as assigned.”  

He has also championed implementation of MagicSchool/MagicStudent AI for classroom integration, and leads professional development related to artificial intelligence challenges and opportunities in a K-12 teaching and learning environment. AI has become integral to Jake's work, and he serves as the conduit to district leaders and staff members eager to enhance their workflow.

Prior to school communications, Potter worked for a public relations firm in the Kansas City area providing strategic communications counsel and support to a variety of local and state public sector agencies and federal organizations.

Potter has served the Kansas School Public Relations Association (KanSPRA) in various capacities since 2016, including as president in 2021-22 . He also serves as the South Central Region Vice President of the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), representing Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

He is a frequent presenter at chapter, statewide and national conferences, including the NSPRA National Seminar and National School Boards Association.
